As he paints an image of a tumbling creek, Mark will walk through his creative process, start to finish. He'll talk about selecting and arranging visual elements based on a photo reference and he'll discuss the choice of substrate and techniques. The painting will develop and evolve while he works, diverting from the photo to become a unique creation with its basis in reality, memory and imagination.

Mark Ivan Cole grew up in the Andes and considers himself fortunate to have lived in or near mountains for most of his life. He and his wife lived in Taiwan for more than eight years, exploring Asia, India, Europe and South Africa from that base. Cole has honed his painting skills in several media, creating his art on location around the world and in the studio. He is currently based in the Pacific Northwest, where he continues to explore the mountains and woods that inspire his art.

His paintings have been juried into and won awards in local, regional and international shows, and have been shown in the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, the Art Museum of Los Gatos, and the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California. His work has hung in galleries in Florida, Oregon, California and Taiwan, and is in the permanent collection of the MingART Gallery in Suzhou, China.

He is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and has been teaching workshops under their auspices as well as on his own.

Michael Reardon has been painting in watercolor for over thirty years. An avid traveler, he uses watercolor to record his observations, convey a sense of place and light, and communicate his impressions of the built, natural, and imagined worlds. He works from his studio in Oakland, California.

In 2005 he was the recipient of the prestigious Gabriel Prize from the Western European Architecture Foundation, which enabled him to spend three months painting in Paris. Originally trained as an architect with a degree in architecture from UC Berkeley, he was an architectural illustrator for over thirty years.  In 2004 he was awarded the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize, the premier award in the field of architectural illustration.

His watercolors have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the annual shows of the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, and the California Art Club. In 2011 he presented a solo show at the Thomas Reynolds Gallery in San Francisco. 

He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and the California Watercolor Association. He is also the author of Watercolor Techniques: Painting Light and Color in Landscapes and Cityscapes from North Light Books.

Master pastelist, Lyn Asselta, has considered the landscape her muse since she was a child.  Growing up on the coast of Maine, where weather often changed by the minute, the effects of atmosphere on land and water were an everyday, mesmerizing occurrence. Her memories are rich in details of the natural world and she draws from her love of nature when creating her paintings.  Her chosen medium of pastel allows her to extend her tactile sense of communicating with the world into the painting process at her easel.  

Asselta’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and have been included in invitational exhibitions in France and China.  As a workshop instructor, she has taught in Canada, Curacao and across the USA. She is an IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies) Eminent Pastelist, a Pastel Society of America Master Pastelist, a member of the Salmagundi Club, a member of several pastel societies, and is the founder and past president of the First Coast Pastel Society in northeast Florida. In 2009, Lyn was selected as an Artist in Residence at Acadia National Park in Maine.  Her work has been featured in art publications including Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, and Pratique des Arts.

Andy Evansen’s interest in art started in childhood, and he can’t recall a time when he wasn’t drawing. Once he began painting, he found himself attempting to capture the landscape with an economy of brushstroke evident in the work of the British watercolor artists he admired.  In addition, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by. “When I decided to begin painting 30 years ago, there was never any question in my mind what medium I would choose.  Watercolor has always fascinated me; the effects of pigment and water mixing on the paper are so unique and challenging and the results so beautiful.  It is also the perfect medium for capturing those fleeting moments and light effects when working on location.” He has been featured in many publications and is a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally.  He became a signature member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) in 2012 and served as their President from 2015-2017. His paintings have won numerous awards, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society in New York. “While learning, I painted strictly from photographs and am glad I took that route.  Watercolor is challenging, as it relies on timely washes that can be affected by the weather and a large amount of confidence due to its unforgiving nature.  I now paint ‘en plein air’ as well, which has reinforced my efforts toward choosing strong, simple subjects and working quickly to capture the essence of the scene.” His love of painting on location also led to him being included in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event.

Ms. Smith is an award-winning artist who has exhibited widely in the US as well as France, Germany, and China. She was the Invitee de Honneur of le Societe des Pastellistes de France in 2014. Other recognitions include being named a Master Pastellist - le Societe des Pastellistes de France, Eminent Pastelist and Masters Circle Member - International Association of Pastel Societies, Master Pastelist - Pastel Society of America (PSA), and Distinguished Pastelist -  Pastel Society of New Mexico . She has been published in 3 books, featured multiple times in The Pastel Journal, American Artist, and Pratique des Arts magazines, and judged and written for The Pastel Journal. She teaches, offers critiques, and has twice juried “Enduring Brilliance”, the annual exhibition of the PSA at the National Arts Club in New York City, for whom she has offered portfolio reviews. She is in the collection of the Ming Gallery Art Museum, dedicated to pastel paintings, in Suzhou, China. Ms. Smith is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, now living in Wauwatosa. She is known for her contemporary landscapes interpreted in a beautiful fusion of realism and abstraction.
